For those of you who are listed here, how much traffic does it generate for you?

I'm kind of annoyed that the basic submission is $79.

I can't say for certain, but from what I've read on these forums, not very much. GoTo.com seems to be the best pay-to-be-listed search engine.

It's difficult to judge with Looksmart as their listings show up at Excite, Altavista and MSN as well as Looksmart itself. If you're in any way trying to sell something on the site it's probably worth it.

Consider that a 2-3 line ad in a local paper will cost that much and is finished in a few days. Whereas a good listing in Looksmart will bring traffic and sales for a long time.

The problem with LookSmart is that they are claiming a 78% 'reach' and that is confusing a great many people. Think about that for a minute. Do you really think 78% of web surfers are using LookSmart to search the web?

The answer is a resounding 'no.' What they are referring to is their partnership with other engines and ISP's who use the LookSmart service to power their own search results. But again, think about that. That does not translate into hits.

For example, many people use the Time Warner cable modem service, Road Runner, to connect to the Internet (this is an exapmle of where LookSmart is coming up with their numbers). But how many of those people actually use the RoadRunner home page interface to search the web?

    The answer is very few.

Anyway, I have a much more indepth article about all this on my web site if anyone is interested. But the bottom line is that LookSmart gets the award this year for marketing hpye - not performance.

Before paying the LookSmart fee make sure you've done your best at estimating your return on investment. Since the LookSmart listings with even their new associatons (AV, Excite, etc) are secondary - you may well find that your $79 can be spent better elsewhere.

    Hi JK,

Thanks for your advice on LookSmart, I almost paid that $79 until I read your reply to Kat's post. I have seen your other posts in this forum and am indeed impressed. Your Spiderfood and Glass Buttom websites are superb too.
