Another note, my sites traffic doesn't seem to be affected, the last 2 months traffic has been up. Still sucks though, I worked hard for that PR6, endless submitting of links and link exchanges.
Change your links to use nofollow and you'll be in compliance with Google's TOS.

I bet only webmasters and SEOs care about PR. Most people dont even know what it's for.

    This is my 1,300th post

The problem is that there are probably more that think they know what it's for - and are wrong...

    And congrats.

Do you happen to know if link resellers like linkworth allow this?
Also my site has a '****' like news system that has lots of external links to news sites, should those links have nofollows?

Why not? You are serving those articles for your readers, not bots.

Google is forcing people now to think twic an only link (without a nofollow) to other quality sites, instead of swarming the web with everybody linking to everybody, which defeats the purpose of PR.

One interesting question I would pose is...
Would you be less likely to buy an ad on a site if the pagerank was lower? Do you you use pagerank as a metric for deciding where you will buy advertising?
(even if there is no search engine value)

It would depend really. It would be one indication, but traffic and growth (not to mention relevance and the sustainability of the site), as well as the quality of the content on the site would be other factors to consider when purchasing advertising space on a site.

But I'm not an advertiser (I just make sites), so what would I know about the whole system?

I didn't sell links, but I did engage in sitewide link exchanges. Not that I linked indiscriminately to any site that requested such. In any case, this linking practice is IMO the reason why my front page (visible) PR went from 5 to 3.

Now, what is the direct effect of this? Any subsequent link exchanges I would try to setup would be with sites with a relatively lower (visible) PR. In fact, link exchanging for PR reasons only would be rendered useless or ineffective. I would have to focus on traffic based linking.

Google is forcing people now to think twic an only link (without a nofollow) to other quality sites
That makes no sense for Google though. They would want you to link without nofollow to other quality sites, if you think they are indeed quality sites. That's the whole idea behind PR.

I agree, with all the updates I've been seeing some strange things happening when G does some updates. Some PR sites getting better ranking and some getting worse.

I actually am happy with my PR results. I worked very hard and I could increase some of my website´s PR. I do not believe that you could get lower PR if you sell links on your website. It is not against law or anything like that. Google does the same. You have to pay by Google Adwords that your website comes up on top of search results.

Very strange to hear that pr is going down on some sites. Mine has gone up from 0 to 2 from the beginning of this year. Google must have redone the maths behind the PR system to effect everyones website rankings.

Probably because people aren't searching for them as much as you'd like them to.

Yes and that was the idea when it all started, but now people are buying and "buying" links, do link exchanges, etc. etc. In the beginning we all (example -10 000 webusers) proclaimed our authorities (linking), but now that everybody (1 000 000) is shouting out loud (linking), it has become like the House of Parliament with everybody shouting. It has become very difficult to hear the music between the noise and to make thing even more difficult, there are still only 10 positions available!

It's against Google's TOS and you can get a lower PR by selling links. It's happened already.

InsuranceNetwork, he's showing up on the first and second pages across the board (meaning most search engines) for things related to Web accessibility, so I'd say he's doing "pretty damn well".

Hi MrMuaz, and welcome to SitePoint!

If you need some specific information, why don't you start a new thread? (If it's a review of a site or a design element, you must post it in the "Website Reviews" board after reviewing three other sites/design elements within the past 30 days.) I'm sure you'll get the answers you need, and the community at large will also benefit from the knowledge given as well.

    PR is worthless.
Unique pages will do nothing to improve his PR.
Anyone can buy unique content and build a unique page.
The sooner we ignore Google PR, the better.

Hard to say if PR is worthless
One of my sites had dropped in PR and the traffic went with it. The other site had gained PR but not the traffic. I haven't really made any significant changes to either. Soooooooooooooooooo very confusing

In 2005, one of my awesome PR6's went to PR5, and I noticed no changes.

It's a gimmik to keep us talking about Google, thinking about Google and eventually buying ads from Google.

    And it works, sometimes...

The odds are it wasn't the PR that caused the drop. Since the PR you see is stale data you can't correlate it to your current rankings or much of anything really.
