    Segmentation fault accessing mysql

I'm getting a seg fault trying to access mysql, and its driving me crazy. Any ideas on what may be going wrong or how I should proceed trying to debug?

    [root@access scripts]# mysql -u root -p
    Enter password:
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 2
    Server version: 5.1.39-log Source distribution
    Segmentation fault
When I look at the log I see:

Segmentation faults mostly indicate serious issues with the program. Try recompiling/reinstalling MySQL on your server.
