Different Types of JavaScript Libraries

As you may know there are a quite few JavaScript Libraries out there. Which JavaScript Library do I choose? We have been getting questions like “what is a JavaScript library?” and “what are the different types of JavaScript library?” so I decided to answer some of these questions up for you!

First, some background information for those who are beginners.

What is a JavaScript Library?

A JavaScript library is a library of pre-written JavaScript controls which allow for easier development of JavaScript-based applications, especially for AJAX and other web-centric technologies.

What is a JavaScript Library used for?

JavaScript libraries allow for easier ties between JavaScript and other languages, such as CSS, PHP, Ruby, and Java. This is to ensure that JavaScript applications will be able to run seamlessly with other, lower-level languages.

Types of JavaScript Libraries

The main core JavaScript Libraries around at the moment such as jQuery, Mootools, Prototype & DOJO. These libraries provide full functionality of core functions. Other types of JavsScript Libraries which can be used in conjunction with the core libraries include js effects libaries, js tools libraries, js graphing libraries, js ajax libraries, js maths libraries and more (see below for a complete list of libraries).
