How much role does social media play in google rankings?

how much role does social media play in google rankings?does it even play a role? how much wight does google give to social media popularity?

There are different point of views on it from different experts. But yes with social media, its easy to link your website. So, you can increase your trust and authority in google by regular updating your profiles. Even if its not helpful, you can get traffic to your website from social media sites.

Linking to your own site will not increase its “trust and authority” as far as Google is concerned. (And most social media links are nofollow, which are discounted by Google.)

Although opinions are divided the role of the links will probably decrease over the next two years as the major social networks (ie facebook) are charging even for post reach for people who liked your page. In a way, facebook is admitting there is too much advertising on the site and filters what users can actually see. Now google is admittedly against anything that has ‘link’ and ‘paid’ in the same sentence. If you look at powerful, but new websites, they are starting to pay more attention to up and coming social networks and less to facebook.

Well if we are talking about building traffic on your website then I guess social media is a good tool, but if you’re asking about the role of social media in google ranking then I guess it doesn’t have any effect at all. Social media only help in building credibility and making the website more visible to many users and that’s it.

Social media plays an important role to get traffic. the popularity of the website enhance on regular unique posting on any social networking site. By getting more traffic on your website Google will improve your website’s ranking.

You have posted this elsewhere, and I think you are mistaken. Can you quote an authoritative source to back up this assertion? How would Google know how much traffic your site is getting?

Actually there is no direct relation between social media and google ranking, social media works as the amplifier for your content where you can share your stuff with others and if that stuff is good then people will surely visit your page which will ultimately make your search results better and effective.

i see this posted here time and again, that gaining traffic will somehow improve your search engine rankings. It’s a myth. How do you suppose search engines would even be aware of traffic coming to your site via social media?

Social Media is playing key role to rank website as well in indexing website.

How? Do you have an authoritative source to back up that claim? As already stated, most social media links are nofollow, so will have no influence on search engines at all. So how is social media playing a “key role”?

HI TechnoBear, thanks for your feedback, I did not write that Social Media links give your better search engine results but they are just a solid medium for your content posting, which can give you some organic traffic to your webpage, and this organic traffic become the basis for your better search engine rankings. Whether we believe it not not, but we cannot deny the power of social media.

Here I am sharing an infographic be SEO expert Neil Patel which clearly tells us the relation between social media and search engine rankings. Please go through it.
That’s an interesting article, but it doesn’t really tie up with what Matt Cutts has said about Google’s use of social media signals.

“Facebook and Twitter pages are treated like any other pages in our web index, and so if something occurs on Twitter or occurs on Facebook and we’re able to crawl it then we can return that in our search results.”

My personal experience says social media plays an important role. It has improved my website ranking and helped increase in conversion rate and reduced bounce rate . Social Media marketing is necessary.

Google Algorithm no body knows but there are some factors that play role in ranking are dofollow links and on page seo factor like h1 tag and bold contents alt tag etc. Same way Social media play role in ranking. Tweets, Facebook likes, +1s are counted for social media measure and it counts for ranking.

Facebook and other social media will appear in search results, where relevant. But I can find no reputable source which says that social media popularity affects the ranking of a web site, which seems to be what you’re claiming.

If I’ve misunderstood your point, then perhaps you could clarify it. Otherwise, please provide a link to a reliable source (preferably Google) to support the claim.

You get different point of opinions by experts. But the thing is working on social media you can increase trust and authority in google by regular updating your profiles which increase traffic and get rankings.

Welcome to the forums, @greenbirdmedia.

Did you read through the thread? That exact point was made before, and I replied to it:
I’m more than happy to have a debate, but simply reposting something which has already been refuted is pointless, unless you can provide some reliable source to support the original statement.

As @TechnoBear says, this point has already been refuted, but if I can clarify any:

You’re talking about different topics and slopping it all around as though it’s the same thing.

A social media page that gets a lot of updates, follows, and traffic may indeed get ranked well. But the social media profile doing well has no direct impact on the ranking of a page. Indirect impact could involve your social media followers then traveling to a page and interacting with it - which might well result in better rankings! But there is no direct correlation between a social media account having high traffic and the owner’s website getting a better ranking.
