Reliable Shared Hosting Company?

Hi,

I am looking for a reliable hosting company for my personal portfolio website. Right now I am using Network Solutions and they are absolutely terrible. My website is down all the time and always loads extremely slowly.

I don’t need a ton of space or bandwidth I just want my website to always be available and to load at a decent speed. I’m willing to pay 5-15$ USD a month. I would like to use cpanel and MySQL/PHP is a must of course.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks

I’ve been using http://www.godaddy.com for 3 years without any problems.

I use Midphase and they have been excellent (one blip last year). I also use Siteground for another site and I’m still deciding on them. I detest that you can not talk to them on the phone. Other than that, they have been OK.

There are plenty of companies out there. My suggestion is to stay away from the one’s that offer Unlimited Space & Unlimited Bandwidth. Because I believe there is no such thing.

I have found the best way to find a good hosting company is to do what you are doing by asking for suggestions but also to look online for reviews.

I have used a few different review sites but the best way is still go to the search engines and search hosting reviews.

From there I begin calling these hosting companies and finding out what they have to offer but as well to see if someone is available 24/7 for support.

hello,

I personally use dreamhost after switching from webhosting.net and so far so good. I run drupal sites (2 of) and so far so good

Cheers

Dave

hi you can find lots and lots of hosting companies in google… just try there…

I assume that’s their shared hosting. Did you try any other host prior to Godaddy? While stable, in my experience, applications take a long time to run on their servers (seconds, as opposed to fractions of a second at other hosts).

I have used hostgator and found them to be very much like GoDaddy. Great for small simple websites. Hover, if you are looking to host an active MySQL/php based CMS site I would find a host that allows for more control.

Sigh again; I get tired by quoting myself repeatedly. But here we go.

I didn’t mean to bash GoDaddy… they are a very economical web host and work great for simple websites. However we found with php/MySQL driven CMS’s such as Wordpress or Drupal GoDaddy was less than impressive.

If you are interested in seeing how well the site performs, feel free to visit our site.

It loads pretty fast here. In my experience as well, Hostmonster is decent speed wise (about 2-3 times faster that Godaddy which you mentioned as well).

That is “your” web site. I believe for his web site he might get different results. Any web hosting company can’t be the same good or bad for everyone.

I run a small web design and development firm and we have been using Host Monster for a few years now. Although not perfect, they meet all of our business needs at a reasonable price. On one of our shared hosting accounts we am running over 10 Drupal sites without issues.

We used Go Daddy before that, and I would stay away from them like the plaque!

Good luck,

Well, my choice is Resellerclub ! Excellent uptime and amazing support !

And they use cPanel as well, for your convenience !

I have been to so many different hosting company and find that godaddy, is the best hosting company that I have ever found. The support is wonderful, all the extras are super and I am never down.

There are prime hosting companies: ones that actually have a sever farm with power backup and loads of technicians and IT staff.

Then there are companies that have no server farms but purchase the use of those prime server farms and have access to actual servers. Then they resale the service. looking like they actually have the equipment.

GoDaddy is a prime server farm.

I suggest using either hostmonster.com or hostgator.com which I’ve been using for a few years now and have really no complaints, they even have a 24/7 online chat to help you when you need it.

However I don’t like to use hosts’ domain services, I highly recommend 4domains.com for domains. You can manage your DNS zone, which means you can setup anything.domain.com and use code to determine what page to serve. Also, you can point different domains to different servers so your mail.domain.com can be on a different server than your www.domain.com. Another good purpose I found is if you are like me and setup php, apache, and mysql on your own computer you can setup dev.domain.com to point to your computer which can also make beta testing more private, secure, and more efficient to work with.

Dreamhost, do a good Google for coupons and you can get up to $50 off a pretty well priced plan of basically unlimited for a lot of people. There’s also a nice upgrade feature if you want a more dedicated environment. They have the best coupons I’ve seen.

I’m not the biggest fan of their CP, but the hosting is great, and you can import your old Cpanel.

“Sorry you’ve got too many files”, “Sorry, your files are too large”, “Sorry, you’re using too mich CPU” - and that was just downloads, no PHP.

Sorry you are overusing the memory limits etc.
Those are gimmicks which such providers use. And if someone sign up for such (eat as much as you want) provider he should be ready for that. Even if he does not overuse.

Well that’s my point - most users are not aware of that, or that those extra limits tucked away in terms and conditions will most likely stop them getting anywhere near the headline limits advertised - It’s a bit like DSL providers in the UK being allowed to advertise services as unlimited, even though they have a fair usage policy that kicks in at say 30GB/month.
