If it varies things are considered normal. Because it’s normal for google to see websites links to each other without taking into consideration its niche.
Otherwise It would be too easy for someone to outstand your competition don’t you think? Just hire a bunch of spammers that will spread their links on many rubbish websites. So it’s a rumor, Google wont ban your website by doing so. But Only quality links ( with Domain Authority) Will make your rise in the SERPS.

Its spam. You are a parasite abusing other peoples websites to get backlinks. Most of them get deleted or are not indexed. If you did it on any of my forums, consider your site reported to Google via the spam report tool as using this method of building backlink.

Yes, I said that I used it on 1 website and it worked. I test things before I go straight to a conclusion. Some other SEO said it worked too even if considered as spamming.

In my book, that’s positive because it is very tempting to keep on using a system that you know it works… and he decided that it was not good to work this way.
