Photoshop crash on mac destroys psd

Something happened last night I have never seen before ever.

I was working on a psd for a site I was working on and suddenly my screen starts going dark grey as though a mist was coming down on my screen, a bit like when the blue screen of death comes down from the top slowly on windows.

It then said I had to restart by holding the power button down so restarted opened photoshop back up and opened my psd and it had destroyed it, all my layers had gone, yet it was still the same file size. I couldn’t edit anything and this is the result.

Has anyone had the same happen to them?

If you unable to open your photoshop and psd then no other option to take help from data recovery companies.

Is that a shamless plug?

What you described was a kernel panic. They’re rare, but they do happen on occasion. See Apple’s tech note on kernel panics.

As for your photoshop file, if it’s hosed, it’s hosed. Go find your most recent backup of that file.

If you use Time Machine as part of your backup routine, there will be hourly backups of that file, as long as you saved it regularly. So you may not lose more than an hour’s worth of work.
