Why not work on getting other content besides just the e-commerce content? Webmasters that don’t have a lot of content aren’t succeed in today’s SEO world.
I agree with the last poster. Or just try to add a articles section that way you can keep your site fresh with updated content.
As far as promotion do it like you would any site and go out and get links. Use forum marketing, blog commenting, articles, directory submissions, link exchanges, press releases and any other form of linking (social media is great now for traffic and linking).

I hate to say this, but I think you should consider a little PayPerClick campaign for a short term along with your SEO.
I have an ecommerce site and I created a companion blog for it (on a separate domain). I’ve found it significantly easier to rank the blog for keywords. Pretty much all the outbound links on my blog are to my ecommerce site, which has driven good targeted traffic. However, from purely a SEO perspective, I’ve found it very easy to rank my ecommerce site for longtail keywords.

You need to create contents for your site and do on page seo on the site such as search engine friendly urls, page titles, keywords, meta tags and so on. At the end, it all comes down to what kind of content you have and how quality they are.
