I tried logging in last week and i had noticed that it was getting slow some 2 weeks back bit then it was working fine. Must be some problem with the internet connection.

Both the server and the application affect your site performance. You may check with your hosting provider if your server (hosting package) is still running fine? Then, ask them try to diagnose your wordpress if the application caused the slowness?
I don’t think so as it takes less resources in comparison to other CMS and it may be with the hosting plan and provider you have taken.
Yeah, really it’s quite heavy may be because it have huge users. But this is the one of the best, popular and useful site. 
used wp total cache and then switched up to wp super cache and has been helping and making things much much faster. The server load was crazy when we would post stories to digg and now the super cache is saving them so they can be accessed faster on the server. Worth a try to speed things up!
I think now it is much better, it is never slow now. So it has to be the server.
please remove unnecessary plugins from your site and gif and flash file also.You can also use "w3 total cache " plugins.

Thanks for the comments. I have switched serves with godaddy and that has helped. It has gotten much faster. The minify doesn’t even work on W3 Total Cache, so I may try SuperCache.
