Welcome to The SitePoint Forums

That one.

:wine_glass: Prost! Hahaha…Oh my. I just ran into that um, smiley/ icon? Is finding what smilies are available supposed to be like some sort of game? Sorry, but I’ve never used Discourse before and I don’t know if this discoveries I am making are good or bad.

Scott

With regards to the reply buttons, some forums have a choice to display threads by time posted or by posts/threads, I forget the exact wording: (

So the button only shows the replies of those who clicked the reply button on your post (so their response was derived from your response). – I use this quite a bit

The grabs a whole lot more and may be a bug. As it is confusing to read through all of that (you have to scroll up a lot and then scroll back down reading stuff that is old…) – I rarely use this feature

Holy Bologna Batman. The reference link at the top right really does make a mess of the thread. I can see and partially understand what it is attempting to do, but holy smorgasbord, it adds to the confusion, instead of making the thread more organized and understandable.

Yeah—lucky dip!

But seriously, I was bothered by this too, so as a stop gap, I loaded them all into the Cheat Sheet (near the bottom). They have recently changed from the emoji set to some other set with an ever weirder name. We are looking into options for changing this, as no one is really that pleased with them.

…or you can use my solution in the meantime :

Thanks for the reply Ralph. But isn’t this kind of “getting it right or better” stuff the things you should have done before you released a new software on your users?

And the fact you have to write up a “cheat sheet” for “basic functions”, doesn’t that tell you a whole lot about the new software itself? I’m still trying to understand the difference between “Watched” and “Tracked”. Like, if I do one, why wouldn’t I want the other?

Sorry guys and gals, but Discourse is, as far as I can tell, in terms of a discussion platform, one or two steps backwards from even PHPBB3, simply because it doesn’t allow the context and flow of a discussion to be read and understood without extra work by the user and even then, the deeper flow and context of further parts of the discussion are all hacked up, because comments to posts go to only one level. The best thing would be is to change the reply button to a quote button and get rid of the “Reply(ies)” button and the reference to the person being replied to.

Oh wait, yeah, that would bring the system back to the old skool forum style of doing things, right? Yes it would. There is a reason why it’s been like that for over a decade you know. Because it works! It just works. Discourse doesn’t AFAICT.

So enough from me. I just hope you all aren’t sitting back all happy and jolly about this change. It sounds like you aren’t really. That is sort of a shame. I hope you can get it right in the end for the community here.

No, there’s a lot we’d like to improve—and are actively doing. As @HAWK has explained on the SitePoint blog itself, there were long considerations early this year about how to improve the forums, including the possibility of moving to other platforms. There was no perfect answer, but on balance, for various reasons, HQ decided it was worth jumping on board with Discourse. It’s not perfect, but it’s a fresh new start and will no doubt mature over time. It also fits in better with the modus operandi of SitePoint, which is a “Rails house”, so to speak.

Well, like I said, I really do hope you all can get it right. If there is enough caring, I am sure you will. Best of fortune to you all.

Just moving to Discourse is a big improvement even without all the things still being worked on. Someone would need a cheat sheet for all those other forums too if they didn’t already know the commands and for those already familiar with the codes Discourse uses (which are also used in LOTS of other places) no cheat sheet would be required here.

That’s what I suggest, my screenshot above just moved the “replying to” thing, it’s already position-absoluted… then you just add some top padding on the main comment part to give it room.

Sorry if I don’t agree with this. Of course, you want the best experience for your users (in this case, our members) and want it to get the right or better stuff there. But perfection doesn’t exist and if you’re trying to add better stuff, or fixing stuff to make it better to release the product, it would never see the light.

Also, even if you had a number of people helping your to do the testing and all that (and some people here did a lot of testing and been spending lots of time so things improve), once you release the product to the general public, you may find that all that you thought you knew or what you thought would work and reality are two different things.

That’s why hoest, unbiased feedback is always welcome.

And yes, I too think that the new emoji are horrible. I didn’t even liked the first ones lol

Not especially constructive Scott. I’m disappointed.

[/quote] We are actually. This migration has been a dream and you are the first naysayer. It goes without saying that this will take some time to get used to, but I’ve been on Discourse for a few months now and it leaves vB in the dust. I’m looking to dump vB for all my forums now.

Anyway, thanks for stopping by. Take care out there.

Keep pushing forward! Everyday I am growing to love this site more and more!

Buddy

So I found out I am a basic user. Other than that, welcome to 2014 SP Forums. If we could even use the “forums” anymore!

Welcome to the forums! Basic is purely a Trust Level that permits all functionality of the forum. The only limitations to Basic are: You can’t send group PMs and you can’t invite people to topics. Beyond those two items, you have full access to all of the features of the forum.

Stick around, read a lot, make a few good posts and you’ll soon become a “regular” member.

Yeah…stick around @conradical . Post alot.

I am working towards owning this forum. That’s a trust level of 10 so I’ll let you know when I get there. lol
