Welcome to The SitePoint Forums

I’ll play around with this tonight. See if I can repro it

Try logging in as me. I get it consistently : )

Maybe something shows in your logs too, if it works that way. There’s be the request of me sending my credentials, and then there should be another request for the same page.

I moved 57 posts to a new topic: To love Opera, or not to love Opera

I haven’t recreate it yet… are you using an alternative login method, such as, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, or GitHub? And if so, which one?

I just attempted with Chrome 37 and Firefox 31 (currently updating Firefox). Firefox 32 didn’t do it either for me…

Definitely reproducible using Opera 12 on Linux (which is the latest version for Linux…) though! But it doesn’t happen on meta.discourse.org@system @santouras

Hi,

First congrats on the migration. Hope it works out well for Sitepoint.

I noticed something in this and other threads and am not sure if it is supposed to be that way, but it is sort of annoying. Posts are posted as post comments and as posts, so you end up reading replies twice. I can’t imagine that is correct. Here is just one example from this thread.

That’s because you clicked the Reply button.
If you are interested in seeing the “sneak preview” click it.
If you know you are going to read the entire topic and it bothers you to read the reply twice - don’t click it.

BTW - you are not the only one to bring this up, it was discussed at the Discourse meta site and what I posted above is my “in a nutshell” summary of the app developers decision.

I find it annoying to read out-of-order as well.

What would help this without muckiing with the current setup much is moving the reply-to icon (the person the post is replying to) to right above the new text of the new post. Right now if your screen is wide, it’s very far away and you have to remember to check way over there for meta-info about the post you’re reading way over here : )

Ah, that’s a different beast.

The grey Reply button under the post is “someone replied to this post”
The arrow avatar name is “this person replied to a previous post”

There also was discussion of the location of that at Discourse meta and the app developers decision was basically “nope, it’s good where it is. If you don’t like it change it in your site’s CSS”.

Thanks for the reply, but the functionality still makes about zero sense to me.

If I decide to pass on opening the up replies with the grey “Reply(ies)” button and just continue reading, then the actual replies, in many cases, are missing context and thus reading the whole thread is a weird experience. If I do read the replies, by clicking the grey"Reply(ies)" button, then I end up rereading the same replies again, which again is a weird experience.

And you are saying this is standard and proper functionality in Discourse too? OMG! LOL! What a joke then.

OMG #2, The smilies and the selection of them are terrible…

Hopefully both issues can be fixed.

 Yep, I definitely didn’t have the problem with Firefox (nor Chrome… but the version of Chrome on Linux is significantly different right now than Windows).

Yes, Yes they are! We hope to find a way to improve them, at least I keep pushing it

The idea, which doesn’t work for threads like this one, is that a topic is a single discussion. Where in this topic we have multiple discussions going on. The “Welcome” discussion, and the “I’ve found the following items that seem problematic” discussions. that causes gaps in the readability. I think you’ll find you run into this a lot less in different topics.

I agree with @s_molinari it is confusing. I just started clicking the Grey buttons thinking the person was replying to my Post within the thread. Initially I thought that was cool. But then I encountered that reply further down.

I understand the logic now but it is confusing and misleading. I won’t be clicking on that grey button any more. lol

Buddy

Um, rarely does a thread ever stay completely on topic.

In most other forum systems you have a quote feature, which is used to preserve the context of the reply. This system keeps the context, by placing the replies underneath the post they are replying to, which is ok (until you start getting replies to the replies). But, to also find those same replies again somewhere further down in the thread is just most definitely poor UI.

I thought this was supposed to be a leg up from vBulletin. This confusing feature is a couple of steps backwards IMHO.

I am sorry. I’m getting a bit ranty, when I shouldn’t. I actually don’t really care too much about this forum, as I am not a regular here. I just know a bad forum feature, when I see one. Well, I think it is bad, until someone else explains to me the merits of it being different. Different isn’t always good.

I still wish Sitepoint all the best with the new software.

Scott

Oh wow. I can like my own posts. LOL!

I think I’ll leave now.

Scott

Really? Which one - I don’t see it. Is it in another thread?

Now I am replying to my own post. But if you notice the image I uploaded, if you didn’t read the grey reply and didn’t know to look at the reference at the right to whom HAWK was actually replying to, you’d think HAWK was answering ralphm. I can’t imagine active threads making any real sense actually.

So, let’s see where my post lands now.

Scott

Like the above? I think you are making assumptions to what the “Replies” button does. It simply shows you in one location who all replied to your particular post. That’s it, it isn’t meant to try and fill in any gaps.

That’s because no one is fully using the “Reply as New Topic” feature yet. Instead of keeping off topic discussions in the topic, you should use that feature to start a new topic. It then links the new topic with the post that initiated the “change in subject”. It really is a great way to help prevent topics from going “off-topic”

Sorry, I take that back. I was mistaken. It wasn’t my post, but my post was quoted.

Scott

How did you do the quotes? Ah! Ok. With highlighting. Ok. That is cool.

I am not making any assumption. It DOES fill gaps, once I click on the button, it fills all kinds of gaps. LOL!

Maybe it is because the location of the “Reply as New Topic” button/ link is poorly placed?

I am very much inclined to press “Reply” and not anything else.

Scott

Maybe we are talking about two different buttons… Which one are you referring to (as they work differently)

This one:

Or This one:

That is a fair statement. @HAWK @orodio, what do you think? Can we make the Reply as New Topic a bit more pronounced?

Funnily, since I’ve been using Discourse (most of this year) I’ve never clicked on the 1 Reply type buttons under posts. I tend to read down the threads as in the old forum. What I do find really handy is the icon top right of a post linking to the post that is being replied to. That’s a nice innovation, IMHO.
