Updated: SilverLight Saturation

Hey guys,

I made a post about this awhile back, in reguards to SilverLight saturation. Well, just recently SL has passed 60% usage on computers and wanted to update the numbers for new .NET'ers. The thing that stands out to me is the time it took to reach 60%. V.4 of Flash had <1% market share. While SL is approaching 40% with V.4. Outstanding in my mind.

I will start to focus time and effort on SL once it reaches 80%, which will happen by the beginning of Fall this year. I don’t give a crap what web standards zealots think, HTML5 will fall below expectations, a la XHTML. The real guage of adoption, is how long it takes to build an identical app in HTML5 vs. SilverLight/Flex. Remember AJAX? That was supposto revolutionized the industry, but fell flat. Same will happen with HTML5, all hype, no substance.

RIA is the future of the web, and I double-down on plugin technology, Flash/Flex and SilverLight. I would rather build my apps in C# and XAML then CSS and JavaScript. That is not the reason they we’re created.

So, when will you adopt Silverlight for client/personal projects? 80%, 90%?

Here is the website I use for the RIA market usage for my numbers:

www.riastats.com

It’s actually fun to watch, as the number for SilverLight grows literly everyday.

lol. That is true.

Personally, I like HTML5 and the entire concept behind it. I however, also do not see it working. As then we are going to be in the same boat. IE not supporting it correctly. And also problems with video standards. As now the browser must handle the video, and firefox refuse to use h264 encoders, as it is not OpenSource. But that is being adopted by youtube and the like. So youtube not supported in firefox?

AJAX hardly fell flat if you ask me. Maybe MS AJAX, yes, but the entire concept drives tons of websites and makes the entire user experience much better.

I would rather build my apps in C# and XAML then CSS and JavaScript. That is not the reason they we’re created.

Why not use all of the above? I would only use silverlight/flash for stuff that cannot be done with CSS and js.

I will definitly get into silverlight, just as soon as I have time.

Being part of windows update and installed on win7 by default probably doesn’t hurt . . .
