Use HTML5 or otherwise

Hey folks, I have a background in traditional enterprise software, and I am trying to gain expertise on newer technologies. I will greatly appreciate, if you could help me understand, when to use HTML5, when to use Flash and when to use Silverlight. If you could point to some tools etc that will be helpful. Thanks for your help

There is no time to use HTML5, it is only a draft recommendation at this point, an early work in progress, and major browsers don’t (and can’t) support it extensively yet.

Yes!

use HTML5 for experimenting.
use Flash for video, animation, audio players, video games and so on…
I’m not totally sure on what all silverlight can do (never used it), but I guess it’s alot like flash.

Flash and Silverlight are for multimedia, app development and gaming.

HTML5 is like every other version of (x)HTML… it’s for structuring the websites.

Flash and Silverlight are not comparable to HTML, nor are they going to replace it.

…and for multimedia, app development and gaming.

multimedia: <video>, <audio>.
app development: cache manifest, online/offline detection, client-side structured storage, contenteditable, drag and drop, pushState(), undo history, cross-document messaging…
gaming: <canvas> (both 2d and 3d).
