Tracking contact form attempts

i realize that linking to a mailto is pretty bad for google analytics. if you put a contact form in a lightbox, is there anyway to track if a person initiates it, and then abandons it? or do you have to make a proper contact page?

next, is there a way to track how far they made it through a form before abandoning?

you may use clicktale. I think google analytic still okie in this case.
