Tracking individual site visitors

Hey all

I have a customer who wants to be able to track visitors on his site. He sends targeted mailings out using iContact.

I’ve not done this before, but my assumption is that we can put some sort of link into each email, then when the user clicks on the unique link, they will go to the site and a cookie will register on their machine. This can then be used in the future to track them using GA?

Is this the right premise? Or is there a better way to do this?

What he really wants to achieve is to know which leads to follow up after the mailing.

Any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated.

Google Analytics should be capable of tracking it.
