How old would a computer have to be to NOT have a USB port?
Since I broke my right arm, I can’t use a traditional keyboard and mouse. (Especially at clients’ sites.)
I have an old keyboard that has a “track-ball” on it, but it uses PS/2 cables.
It has served me well over the last decade, but I would like to get rid of it since it is big, clunky, and worn out.
Last year I bought a smaller keyboard which has a built-in “track-pad” and has USB cables instead.
I would like to ditch the old PS/2 keyboard for my new, smaller USB keyboard. However, my fear is that I’ll come across some client that has a PC that does NOT have a USB port, and then I’ll never forgive myself for NOT keeping my old track-ball keyboard.
If you run into a computer that does not have USB…that thing would have to be ancient. I mean kicking the bucket Windows 95 ancient. But…they do have USB to PS/2 adapters.
I am on a contract away from home and living on the road.
So, YES, it is a real pain trying to find room to store it in my tiny little Honda!
(If I was back home, I would put it in storage, but it’s becoming a real hassle to store it for a “rainy day” if it turns out that I’ll never really need it again.)
It would be safe to get rid of the old keyboard. The chance of using a computer without USB is slim at best.
But if you are still concerned they have adapters to change USB to PS/2.
Yeah, I suppose a computer would have to be really really really old to not have a USB port.
I was more concerned about the operating system not detecting a USB keyboard. (I know had that issue when I used to build my own PC’s.)
Since most of my clients are pretty big, they usually have decent computer equipment, so as long as the Help Desk doesn’t have the USB ports locked down, I suppose it is a safe gamble to ditch my old PS/2 keyboard…
