New Thread in Relation to Gmail Account (Hacking)

I’m writing this new thread for two main purpose:

  1. I was suppose to post a comment in one previous related thread but it was recommended to make a new one since it was 2 month-old thread, so here it is.

  2. I’ve recently encountered (for the first) a notice, when I opened my Gmail account, that 2 unknown users was able to access my said account. It was identified by Google because it had a different IP address. So I was advice that I immediately need to change my password. So I did.

My thoughts on this: I’m very fortunate that at least Gmail was able to detect this strange happening. I hope this won’t happen again, ever.

Furthermore, I’ve have Yahoo account and Thank God, I haven’t encountered hacking problems, although I’ve known people who had this unfortunate experience.

So this leads me to my second purpose…

  1. I just want to ask your reactions or comments about this.
What email server would you prefer personally?
And what made you choose it?

I’d appreciate some response. Thank you so much.

PS
By the way, I hope this thread is on the right place, otherwise, please feel free to move it on the right category.

I’ve used google apps email for a long time and never had any issues, either for my own domains or many client domains. For me,it scores better than any other email provider out there for effective spam filtering, general accessibility, uptime and performance, active development, in when you consider it can be used for free.

If you have an issue with intrusion it’ll likely be down to problems at your end - malware/spyware, insecure network, weak password etc

How did you get this notice about unauthorized users? In your email? And was there a link in the email to change you password? And did you click that link to change your password?

I hope not, that’s typical of a phishing scam.

I don’t use gmail, but of many other mail providers I’ve used over the years, none of them would care what IP my mail client was on. I used to work constantly on the road, checking my email from this hotel or that client office, with a different IP each stop.

I actually got the notice on my gmail but not exactly on the inbox, it appears to be really a NOTICE. It was more presented as an alert notice from Google.

I think it’s a good thing that Google has an Account Access Notice. If they notice any suspicious user trying to access your account, that’s when they send you the notice.

I found out all these from their Learn More button just beside the notice I was talking about.

I’m positive that it’s not a phishing scam. I’d say what the problem was, somebody was able to access my gmail (specifically from Japan and Mexico). And I’m just left wondering what their intentions were and what were the things they did or have done with my dormant account.

However, I’ve changed the password and now will be using it more frequently.

Yes, you’re probably right. I wasn’t really cautious enough since I rarely use the account but I recently decided to do otherwise a couple of days ago. That was when, I found out the notice.

So I guess, I have to follow Google’s security checklist, I’m pretty confident it will be useful.

I’m glad you don’t appear to be a victim, and I think it’s good that Google is paying attention. None of the webmail systems I used ever cared what IP I logged in from.

One question I’d have for Google is ‘was anyone able to log in to my email account, or were they just trying but failing to log in?’

Anyway, I’m happy to hear you seem to have everything well under control. And I guess I should get a gmail account one of these days
