Hello all,
My first site is finally considered “done” by the client. I dove in feet first last year, and got in over my head.
Site is at <snip />.
When this project started, the client said “I want lots of flash.” I think her definition of “flash” is loosely connected to the effects common on sites using Adobe Flash technology. We filled this request by making the homepage one big .swf.
Surprise! Now the homepage is hardly usable on the iPhone and BlackBerry. Key users of the site will visit from these devices, so I’m faced with a decision before wrapping this up.
I need to modify the slideshow presented in the Flash .swf file anyway, and I don’t have the source so I’ll probably end up recreating or decompiling. This is a great time for me to eliminate Flash on the homepage altogether. But what can I use instead to maintain the structure and functionality of this page? Image maps?
Thank you all in advance.
WHy not just use the free jquery script you can find all over the net? Im pretty sure its compatable with black berries and iphones ill look into tho now you got me thinkin
There’s no need to use flash just to get a slideshow!
Javascript and css are all you need.
such as http://nivo.dev7studios.com/
and several here http://www.tripwiremagazine.com/2009/07/25-create-amazing-image-effects-with-some-of-the-best-jquery-plugins-available.html
I’d guess googling on JQuery slideshows would give you hundreds of other good results and you could have it up and running within a few hours of deciding on which one to use.
Go on, dump the big flashy thing, you know you want to.
Or this one with many options, from another sitepoint thread

Hey Skibar …
there has been a lot of talk over the last couple of days about the decline of Flash (from Apple and Microsoft). I myself have personally seen its popularity wane over the last few years. I’ve always thought it too bloated …
I would have ‘convinced’ your client NOT to use it, by giving them lots of compelling reasons against it …
Thank you guys. Sure enough, I did find great Javascript slideshows and we’re already using Javascript (mootools) for other things. I’ll pass the word on and make the change on my next revision. Bye Flash.
You’re right, we can achieve the same effects without the use of actual Flash technology. The lesson I learned here was when they ask for “flash” they don’t always mean Adobe Flash with a capital F.
