In the last 2-3 weeks, Google has gone from indexing about 4,500 of my site’s pages down to about 1,300. It seems to be reducing with time.
Should I be alarmed about this? The site has about 700 backlinks when I type “link:www.site.com”, and that number remains the same.

Unless all those pages have unique content I’d guess a lot are going into “supplemental” and would show up when someone clicks “more”.
I noticed them being very slow indexing my website as well

Could of been a penalty yes, is it a forum? Any duplicate content?
Maybe a few quality backlinks dropped.
Best think to do is not so much worry about it and keep creating quality content and backlinks.
Stuff like this happens without any penalty. What happens is your competitors knock you down and their sites get indexed. Just the way the search engine works. Websites go up, websites go down.
But, I would still check if your site violates any of Google’s terms.
