Is the word GUN a problem within the domain?

Hello Guys,

I have a domain called SilentGun.Com which I was chasing for a while and I finally got it. I am now developing a webmaster blog with it and I was wondering if the word “GUN” would create any problems with the search engines, directories etc. in terms of indexing, listings etc.

The word gun is associated with violence in our society however I am using the domain for something totally different and with a much different purpose.

Your ideas, comments and suggestions will be sincerly appreciated regarding this matter.

Best Regards,

I doubt there will be any trouble because of that word. If it were an obscene word, I could see it being the cause of some censoring, but gun, bomb etc. are perfectly reasonable words. We hear them a hundred times a day one any news channel.

Some hosts will not allow that domain to be hosted.
Good luck.

You shouldn’t have any problem. The word itself isn’t illegal or obscene. You only have to look as far as thesmokinggun website (which is very, very popular) to see that it is being used by others in a legal way. Check your potential host’s Acceptable Use Policy first, and ask them to confirm in an email before you sign up if you have any doubts. There’s plenty of hosts out there that would welcome you as a client.

There is no problem using it as you have said you are going to use it in a blog and doing something totally different.

I don’t think it’s a problem for search engines, but it could cause problems for potential visitors with some internet security software. I had a domain including the word “aflame” (I sell handmade candles) and found some software blocked it on the basis that the site might include violent content.

Content is the most important thing for the SE. And you need to be concentrated on this. Domain name itself can’t improve or affect your SEO efforts.
