How can I move away from a "dud" registrar?

Hi,

I’ve been using 1Coms (1coms.com) for a many many years now, as they were cheap. However, since they got brought out - their customer service has been awful. I emailed them several weeks ago about moving some domains, and haven’t have a reply . I currently have co.uk, .com and .net domains with them. Whome can I go to, to get these moved over to another host? (i.e GoDaddy)

TIA

Andy

.co.uk domains you can move via Nominet.

I was having problems with a registrar, and when I tried to move the domains away, they wanted to charge me £10 + VAT to do so. This is the same change which Nominet makes, so I decided I’d rather give my money to anybody other than the rotten registrar and used Nominet’s service. It’s very easy, and has the advantage that the records are updated immediately.

Can’t help you with .com and .net domains, I’m afraid. :frowning:

Try sending in some more emails, maybe ask Live Support (if they have that) for help. Maybe the last one got backlogged?

Sorry - I’ve just re-read your post and realise you’re asking about moving to another host, not another registrar.

You shouldn’t need to contact the existing hosts to change hosting. Create a full backup in cPanel, upload it to your new hosting account and ask the new hosts to restore it for you.

You get what you pay for.

I would advise to avoid GoDaddy especially for shared web hosting. Namecheap is good for domain registration. Many people advise keeping your domain name registration and your web hosting separate. I generally agree with that.

Research registrars and hosts and decide where you would like to go. As for transferring your .com and .net domains, when you create an account at any domain registrar you can begin the process of transferring your domains out of your current registrar. You may need to “unlock” your domains at your current registrar if it has “domain locking” to prevent unauthorized transfers. And you may need an EPP code from your current registrar to confirm the transfer process.

As for picking a host, there are plenty to choose from.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the reply. I actually did a booboo with my wording - I didn’t mean “host” - I meant “registrar”. My current host is good (I have a dedicated server, and have been with them for 10+ years without any issues)

The problem is with the domains themselves. I’ve sent them an other message, and asked them just to set the tags on all my domains, so I can get them moved over. TBH, I’m not even expecting a reply - as they’ve ignored the last 3 emails I sent directly to them.

Thanks for the replies though - I’ll keep you posted on my progress

Well, in that case my original advice on the .co.uk domains still stands. Log into your Nominet account and do it yourself. Well worth £12 for the lack of hassle.

Thanks - I’ll probably do that, if I don’t get a reply.

Anyone got any suggestions for .com, .org.uk, and .net?

TIA

Andy

.org.uk, or any other .uk, you can also do through Nominet.

Ah perfect

I’m still hoping they are going to reply to me - but I know I had a real pig of a job getting a .co.uk moved from them a while back, as they didn’t seem to know how to update the tag on it (which is a bit disconcerting!)

I’ve changed the thread title to reflect that, and hopefully attract some knowledgeable replies. :)[/ot]

Ok, so still no reply :frowning: I’ve emailed GoDaddy, to see if they can suggest what steps I can do next. I have a domain expiring in 2 months, so wanna try and get them moved over as soon as I can

I second Namecheap, very easy to use. I switched to them from GoDaddy about a year ago or so and I’m very glad I did.

Off Topic:

I never understood GoDaddy. They aim at the average person, but I do things like that for a living and I get completely confused and lost in their site. They make it worse by radically changing it every few months when I only have to log in once a year or more. Those radical changes never make it better.

TBH, I’ve been happy with GoDaddy since I’ve been with them. Agreed, they change their site a bit too much - but I guess they feel they need to change with the times.

Ok, so after a little bit of time on the phone with GoDaddy, I managed to find somewhere on the 1coms panel, where I could get a EPP Key sent to the registered address. After that, I then initiated a transfer, and so far so good. Just waiting for the 5 day period on 1coms end (hopefully automated!) that will validate the transfer for me

I’ll keep you posted!

UPDATE - it worked like a charm  I’ve still gotta move the 1 .co.uk and 1 .org.uk over via http://www.nominet.org.uk/uk-domain-names/manage-your-domain/change-registrar … but thats not too painful.

Cheers

Andy
