Google AutoLinks - Is Google becoming "evil"

Dynamically created js files should reverse any modifications… Put this in a bot-banned directory and this should fix it. I have done this before and tested it with gator and it seems to do the trick.

I am trying to create a generic set of scripts to distribute to all webmasters.

This is one of MANY reasons I am really starting to HATE google. Am I correct in saying what they are doing is a form of “Cloaking”? Their “Do No Evil” mantra now should read “Do No Evil To Our Bottom Line”…

What is cloaking what? They seem to be quite explicit about what they are doing, no?

If you think about it, thats the same as having some guy stood in a shop telling customers that they can get the isame items cheaper around the corner. Surely this sort of thing should not be allowed? I mean if this was a physicall business the competition comission would stop something like that happening, so why does their control no extend to the internet?

It is more like a customer walking into your shop using a phone with internet access to compare prices while they are in the shop, rather than going home and comparing later. In both cases, the user explicitly asks “is this the best price I can find?” Customers who shop online are probably already doing that, using things like Froogal. They just have to have two windows (or tabs) open at the same time, while the toolbar way integrates the two.

I know the laws are sketchy about this to date, but this really sounds like a violation of publishing copyright of some sort…

I see all the average joe do that btw I don’t even have tabs I use IE not Firefox yet but intend to

Hence putting the tabs in brackets for the smart people second

Google is indeed evil, especially for a company that claims to be ‘ethical’. This reaffirms my idea that google is indeed the Beast, poised to index the world! (or if you’re a trekky, the Borg, on a mission to assimilate everything in it’s path).

This must be nipped in the bud as soon as possible, I will be informing google of my concerns with this matter, I hope you all do the same.

Where will it stop?

I did the same, and encouraged people to do so in my article which has just been posted on warp2search and has 430 hits as of now, I expect that to grow at around 5000 by the time it starts getting posted on other tech sites. And thanks to google (ironic, no?) I may get even more hits, from people searching on info related to this.

Personally I respect google, because they give me lot of money and visitors, but I really don’t like what they are about to pull off.

For example, when looking some info on a Pioneer amp model#VSX-D412K look at the results. Pure junk. There’s nothing but storefront pages. What a waste of time
But my number 2 result is from pioneerelectronics.ca…

Sheesh…

Just precise that I didn’t talk about that, I was quoting the guy referring to Google’s IPO. Others are comments I don’t endorse and an example doesn’t make a demonstration.

The debate here is about [my english is not native so forgive me]: does Google have enough power to now get rid off the people who helped them build their business ? Look at the big picture. If the commerce is going to switch to Internet it means that the big ones are also going to switch more and more. What’s difference with Physical World: in physical world you still need small intermediates, on Internet why would they need these intermediates ? Only for filling their prospects database. Once they have enough prospects in their database it becomes rational to get rid off the intermediates since they bring them nothing any more. My bet is that in the coming 10 years they’re going to monopolise the web. The investors behind the Giants are the same than those behind Google why on earth won’t they favor the Giants ? It would be anti-rational and pure faith to think the contrary. 10 years is long enough to prepare for doing something else. Before the dotcom explosion I remember not many people wanted to believe it would end one day, and I think that there will be another delusion that is just logical and as formely nobody would want to see it.

Not at all go to Google’s site blogger.com for example: you have an icon that says “I power Blogger” not “Blogger powers people” so what did you expect

Also they are now belonging to Wall Street Investors - remember they swore year after year that they would always remain a privately held company as pointed here http://www.ideaspace.net/users/wkearney/archives/entries/000570.html - so they have no more the same commitment towards the people as before. They will prefer short term profits to please their owners than build long term strategy to please their servants.

This script is supposed to disable Google’s autolink feature in the toolbar when you put the code into your pages. I haven’t tried it, so let us know if it functions as-advertised!

http://javascript.internet.com/miscellaneous/autoblink.html

if you dont like it - do somthing about it besides complaining.

^ a little js that disables the links

on that note, if i was a google tool bar user and chose to enable the auto-links (the user MUST CHOOSE to enable the auto links) and i came across a site that disabled my auto links… it would not make me very happy.

That said, i still think there should be a simple meta tag to turn it off.

Think that for the person that starts his/her online venture, selling Amazon products is “easy”. Amazon is, in general, cheap. It is international. It has its market. It has a name. It is convenient. Maybe you can find the same book with a lower price somewhere else (online or offline) but that might be available in a particular country, even in just one city while Amazon will deliver it from USA to Japan, or to South Africa.

For a begginer, selling a few books that you know are a good read is a safe thing. And it gives just a few $ that you might need to start with your real business.

But Amazon links do include isbn and that kind of thing. So obviously, it would hurt my budget.

No, as a rule, I do not buy the most expesive item if I can find it cheaper. But sometimes you do buy the expensive item even if there is a cheaper option. It may be more reliable, or have better service, more features, look better, it may be for a present, etc. Millions of reasons. Not always buying cheap products is smart, in the same way that buying expensive products normally is not smart. It depends on the product, the price difference and circumstances.

And a toolbar taking it away from me… Well, I do not like it.

Sorry to quote myself it’s just that what I said could seem farfetched to some but as I just read this other thread http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=237694

it is mentioned in

“…the brass is out to maximize shareholder value. And that means monetizing everything including the kitchen sink.”

I think we’re close to EPIC scenario. See [url=http://www.masternewmedia.org/news/2004/11/29/summary_of_the_world_googlezon.htm]transcript version also.

But probably it will take google faster to get there …

Yea, just like robots.txt to keep the search engines away Im sure google will make it easy to keep their program away. I don’t find anything wrong with it, but if they do start making it where a site looses business then google has gone too far.

google wont make it replace their adwords… or even make it a detrement to their adwords… it wouldnt make sense

It would make sense if adwords don’t bring them real revenue: they have published that they were giving more money to the affiliates than what it cost them. It means it was financed by debts so investors and that it was only meant to create a mass market, once it created they don’t need affiliates any more at least not as much as before.
