I am a freelance WordPress designer and developer who is struggling to find a decent, honest freelancer job search board. I have tried some obvious ones like peopleperhour and Guru, but think these are not much better than scammers really. freelancers.net I think are honest, but has limited work for my skills at the moment. Dose anyone on here have any recommendations from experience and general knowledge?
Most freelance board type sites will have the same issue - a bunch of crappy, spammy bidders and a bunch of crappy, low-information, low-paying employers.
That said, if you’re willing to sift through the junk, there’s tons of them. I have used Elance and Odesk before (I think Odesk changed names or something). I found that despite the site’s advice with the clients that approached me on there, it was easier to take our deal off of the platform and just talk on Skype or the phone and arrange our own deal - but that’s of course less protected.
You need to use filters. Don’t lowball bid to try to outbid everyone. There will always be a lower bidder in places like that. Structure your pitch to sell your strong points. Pitch the price you think you’re worth on the job. If their requirements aren’t detailed enough for an estimate, ask intelligent questions - but not so obfuscated that they don’t understand you, if they aren’t in the tech industry themselves.
I personally filtered for jobs in my own country, that were a certain age, and that were either anticipating above a particular price per hour or above a particular total amount. That helped narrow things down before I even started searching.
Hope that helps. I haven’t used any of these tools in awhile, so I am a bit rusty on what’s out there and best ideas.
