Facebook knows which people I know?

I got this invite from someone last week to join Facebook.
In that e-mail Facebook suggested a list of people I might know.
They were spot on, I knew all people in the list, but the thing is, I don’t have facebook, and I’m sure the person who invited me doesn’t know the people Facebook suggested I could know.
Does anyone know how on earth Facebook knows which people I know? It’s really kinda creapy!

Yes it is creepy and they need to be stopped. “Shoot her!”

In case other people are wondering about the same thing, I think I found the answer, here.

Yes, that’s exactly the case. Same happened to me as well. Someone has granted access to their gmail contacts and I’m in their list.

It’s not creepy, it’s stats. They have an ENORMOUS amount of data about social networks of people. They know who’s friends with who else.

For example: If your friend invites you to Facebook, and facebook knows that this group of 10 people all know eachother, and are in the same city, it will be a good guess that you might know some of them too. The smaller and more close knit the group of friends, and the smaller the number of friends the guy who invited you is, the more accurate it will be.

lol… I get friends send me Facebook invites with the very same. I haven’t been lured into joining FB at all, instead I just send them a direct email back to tell them they owe me a beer for sending me rubbish

True, but that’s not what happened here. Several suggested persons had nothing to do with any of the persons that invited me, I’m 100% sure of that.
As already said in posts #3 and #4 if someone has facebook and allows it to go through their e-mail-contacts to see if anyone in there also has facebook, and they stumble upon my e-mail-adsress, they store that that person has me in their contact list, and they can suggest that person to me when they send their invite e-mail.
I’m not sure if they’re allowed to do that, since they seem to be in the posession of a complete network of people I might know, even though I’m not on facebook myself, and I never asked them and/or gave them permission to use my e-mail-address like this.
