Advice on Selling Ad Space

I’ve developed my application, Cheat Sheet War Room, over the last couple of years and I’ve never directly sold ad space to anyone. The only money I’ve ever made from my application is from Adsense, not a whole lot but it has doubled every year since my site was launched. It basically pays the hosting bills with a little left over.

Anyways someone from a poker site emailed me and offered to buy some ad space on my home page. He wants to add a paragraph to the bottom of my home page promoting his site, and asked me to name my price for 3 month and 6 month durations.

When football season is over I obviously make a pittance from Adsense, so a little extra money to invest in the site would be nice. At the same time my application has absolutely nothing to do with poker.

Should I even consider selling the space to a site that has nothing to do with mine?

He has asked to simply ad another paragraph to my home page, but if I decide to sell the space should I insist that I frame the paragraph and mark it clearly as an advertisement?

Any baseline rules on what I should charge if any?

Any advice would help out, thanks.

After some research I’ve found that I should insist that I include the “nofollow” attribute in my link if I should choose to sell the advertising space. The guy has offered me close to what I make from Adsense in a year (still not a log) so I’m trying to figure out if there is some ulterior motive here or something.

The site he’s requesting I link to has the same PR as my site (4), so I don’t think he’s trying to buy PR, and I want to be sure I don’t somehow penalize my site by posting his link.

you are right in what you are doing first. Many people just try to get their site name and link out there. I have never linked to adult sites or gamblling sites because the are the most spammed sites. I would only do this if I had one of these sites as well. just make sure you have the nofollow on and make sure the paragraph that is written is by your standards not theirs
