Why not Microsoft?

Hello everyone,

Let us discuss a topic that could be different as I think. Why people do not like Microsoft products or Microsoft stuff? What is the problem with that company? Is it a social custom in the western europe to hate the products of Microsoft? or is there any specific reason?

Feel free to discuss and talk about your opinion. (:

I like Microsoft products and software in general. Not a fan boy of any hardware manufacturer though, what ever is cheap but still “good”. I’m a PC gamer so what else is there other than Windows? :stuck_out_tongue:

I dislike Microsoft because, as the market leaders in many areas, they fail to meet expectations most of the time. I think the leaders in a certain market area should be ground-breaking, not coming out with less than we expect all the time. Heck, isn’t it about time we had minority-report-style computers?

I think Vista and IE are good enough reasons. Sure, IE6 is naff because it’s well out of date - but Microsoft are STILL supporting it.

Vista took 6 years to come out and the overall result was - it was complete garbage.

I have to say though, Win7 really blew me away; it won me over from Linux, which I had been using for over a year.

Yeah we need devices that don’t support current technology like USB and Flash  :stuck_out_tongue:

That seems to be funny, what I was thinking is that there is a big reason why people do not like Microsoft. I thought it could be something wrong behind the goals of the company or the people who operating it.

They don’t tend to produce anything truly innovative. Most of what comes out of Microsoft has already been done by other companies. Some of the software and software/hardware hybrid products that have been developed and that are actually innovative tend to get stuck in development limbo.

They don’t always listen to user feedback for bugs and feature requests. Although, some departments are better than others at this.

Price. Their software is expensive (though not as much as Adobe’s)

Win7 is essentially Vista SP3.
Vista was a pretty good OS after SP1 and 2, just like XP and many other OSes before it. Problem was that it was too resource hungry for some of the PCs it was released on at the time - so people blamed vista for the fact the manufacturers had installed it on wimpy PCs.
Then MS cleverly released vista again a few years later with a new name, and by that time pc tech had moved on, every pc could run it, and everyone was blown away.

Smart move, and it must be said that their OS’s are generally world leaders for a reason.

Personally, what bugs me about MS is their tendency to see someone else who has made a good product, look around for the it cheapest, poorest competitor, buy the competitor, and then include it as a MS product - which then puts the superior and original product out of business.

It’s happened with defrag, anti-spyware, and dozens of other pieces of software. But I guess the MAIN reason everyone here would hate them would stem from them doing it with web browsers. IE must have caused more hatred than much else over the years.

I guess it boils down to them using their size to overwhelm smaller competitors with inferior products.

They also have a horrible tendency to try and lock you in to THEIR way of doing things. (though i guess apple and others are just as bad). (Games for windows live, directx, windows movie maker, etc…)

I used to admire Microsoft, the company. Anyone who can make IBM cry “Uncle” deserves admiration. Some of their products, like Excel, are outstanding. Windoze sucks and I would not touch it with a ten foot pole. I used to be an MS and an Apple developer and Microsoft treated me better than Apple did. So it’s six of one and half a dozen of the other.

But one day they made me mad as hell. I tried to get online help and they refused telling me I had to go to my local MS dealer who I knew and who were about as clueless as they come. From that day on, MS has not earned a penny from me. If MS provides online help I expect to get it no matter where in the world I happen to be.

It’s all relative, for every single cliched anti-ms whinetard, there are thousands of people in the general public that happily use microsoft products every day, it’s only tiny niche areas of people who are seriously affected by their widespread dominance in technology that actively dislike them e.g web developers losing time to fixing internet explorer display bugs

What about the millions of people whose computers are infected because of Microsoft security flaws?

I like MS to a certain point just like with any other major company. All make good and bad products to which the public buy into.

I like XP, I would use Linux but since it’s not quite their yet it puts me off from using it. As for MS I’ve recently bought a new webcam, the MS LiveCam VX-1000. The RRP should be £20 but a welknown supermarket (M) in the UK is selling them for £8. The video & sound quailty is brilliant for the price.

I had a speaker system made by MS sadly it would not work with XP but again a very good product.

ugh, I hate the LiveCam software. Can’t do anything with the WMV format the software uses. The audio always goes out of sync when converted to other formats. It’s very annoying.

Did Microsoft infect the PCs themselves or was it the people not taking care of their PCs? going to nasty porn sites perhaps? People are so quick to blame everyone else but themselves, it’s so sad and pathetic.

People think their PC is cr*p when it goes slow and we all know how easy that is to fix but no, it has to be something simple for the many retards out there. They blame the brand or whatever the first name they see is.

It’s actually really, really sad how many “technical” people aren’t technical at all. The amount of Web Developers I’ve worked with that don’t know the basics of using Windows is scary.

Are you sure they’re not linux gurus instead?

I can drive from NYC to Washington without knowing how a carburetor or an ABS thingy works. Why do I have to know how Windows works to use Excel or to write a letter? PCs are over a quarter century old. Time non-geeks can use them satisfactorily, IMO.

You were taught how to drive… Hrmmm, agreed! we need a licensing centre for people so they learn how to use a PC before they get behind the monitor.

:stuck_out_tongue:

I like MS software products and I use them everyday. But still hesitating about switching from Win XP to Win 7

Buy another PC, have both

Hehe I’m planning to upgrade this copy, if I’m right then there are some upgrade packages… but not sure if from XP>7 or only from Vista>7

My main issue with Microsoft is their strategy of making “good enough” copies of others’ ideas…

They don’t try very hard to innovate (unless they have to, like Windows Phone 7), and they don’t try very hard to make exceptional products (maybe except Windows 7, after embarrassing themselves making Vista “not even close to good enough”
