If you site is blogging site or you want blogging type theme then wordpress is used.Joomla ,magento and drupal are other alternative choice to wordpress. BUT in terms of use and flexibility ,wordpress is the best. And yeah it is definitely popular. But to develop a more professional website (eg. ecommerce website) you should use other CMS like drupal or magento.
Wordpress can be managed with limited knowledge and skills.
Also Wordpress.org offers a lot of plugins which add to the customization of the platform.
Apart from that it also integrates well with Google for the purpose of promotion. Yes, I do prefer Wordpress.
