Yes they play a major rle in driving traffic as they have many users and more users=more visitors…so you can use these media to promote your sites.They will ot give you important backlink but also major source of traffic.

Social media sites generally help you to get traffic and for branding but wont help you in SEO ranking.
Facebook, MySpace and Twitter all have rel=“nofollow” attributes and therefore are useless for SEO. (Hoever, they can be wonderful for traffic.)
