The Future of 3D Film, TV & Video Games

If you are buying a higher-end set these days it is pretty hard not to get something 3d-capable. No one is making >240hz panels anymore and to get the 3d it is just software. I think the fad will die down quite a bit as it still doesn’t make sense to do everything in 3d – it requires special people and skills to do it right for a dramatic production. For live events, you’ll see it at very big spectacles but it won’t penetrate into most things in the near future – people just finally started getting plant upgraded to be HD capable and aren’t looking to drop a few more million for 3d-capable.

Probably the biggest uptake one will see is in stuff like the nintendo 3ds – glassesless 3d works in small screen environments very well and probably does alot more for the small picture in general.

To my knowledge in the UK a lot of shops are really struggling to sell their 3D TV’s and adoption of 3D services has been very poor.

It’ll take off eventually, but this was a premature move from the industry to try and make more money and it’s one that will probably not pay off. I suppose it’s down to whether the industry is stubborn enough to keep 3DTV on the agenda or whether to attack something a big better/more profitable.
