thanks SP… you make my life so much easier and my processes more streamlined. what would normally take days takes 4 hours or so with your forums and archives.
the amount of knowledge in the newletters, podcasts, forums, books, tutorials is devastating and no man can get through ALL of it. people ask me on facebook what that Sitepoint at the bottom of my page is all about… i just say, “you wanna start making nice web pages in about a year just soldier up and read and read.”
whoever is in charge of this operation needs to get some kind of award. this operation is lock tight cold X. i really admire when people perfect what they do. i notice that so many lawyers, doctors even, suck at what they do. i would say i am at a medium level in terms of web development ability.
i used to go to like 4 or 5 different forums for help. i can’t even remember now my login names or passwords for any of those sites. basically, i visit sitepoint and the adobe forums and that’s it.
Friggles - that post is theeee most truest thing everrrrrr! I think we all owe alot to SitePoint on the whole, it’s pretty much the reason why I don’t use my signature for my own personal sites because I’ve learned so much from the members/staff here it feels a bit cheeky even though its ok, I just personally can’t bring myself to do it
Hey SirFrigglesworth, thanks for that awesome post.
I’m only a very small part of this operation but since this particular part of it is my responsibility, I’ll thank you on behalf of the organisation in general - not only for your kind words but also for being a part of the forums - it wouldn’t work without you guys, no matter how slick we tried to be!
yeah i have noticed that in life timing is everything and im sure sitepoint had the perfect combination of skill and timing to become the monster it is today. i went to high school with the guy who started Youtube (Steve Chen). Bascially, if he was born two years later he would not have his 1.7 billion dollars. i would imagine trying to start a discussion board on various topics would be very hard today since the market is pretty saturated and the players have already been set.
i remember picking up “Build Your Own Website the Right Way” by Ian Lloyd like 7 months ago. i saw it and i was like “ehhh why not? I love the world wide web so let’s see if i can build pages?”
7 months later my .css and html are mediocre and i find myself more studying photoshop to make my designs more attractive. i know this is a cardinal sin and my focus should be on .css perfection, but one average man can only do so much. it really is a shame when you get stuck in the photoshop fixed layout world, but i am planning to do a good mix of both in the future.
well I don’t say that that is like theeee worse phase everrr! btw, that is my comic-book-store guy impression - not a ditzy like omg whateverrrrr don’t go there gf impression
@photoshop layouts - I tend to get into that trap too, especially when I first started webdesign it’s hard to break out of bad habits especially ones you enjoy! But I’m breaking the mould slowly but surely!
comic book guy’s greatest moment ever:
he’s lying in a wheelbarrow with cheeseburger wrappers scattered all about him and he says, “loneliness and cheeseburgers-a deadly combination.”
