I found a neat keyword, that has around 60k searches per month, according to Google AdWord Keyword Tool, and low Competition, and, offcourse, it’ appropriate for my site.
Disclaimer: I’m not naming the keyword, because the site is not in english, so it would have no purpose, as not so many of you would know it’s meaning.
Anyhow, the site is driven by wordpress, and i have a category that is named just as the above mentioned keyword. So, my question is - is it a smart move to try and optimize the category page for that keyword, or should i aim for the whole site.
The whole site is, in fact, related to that keyword, just, under that category more articles containing that kw and similar terms are concentrated.
Anyhow, i think it’s rather pointless to optimize a category page, because it is rarely done, but few people told me, that if i do it right, it can have a significant impact on traffic. What do YOU think?
My advice would be … think about where surfers will want to land on your site. Is the category page going to be the one that most of them want (if they’re searching for that keyword), or will the homepage serve them better?
If they’re searching for a general term and they land at a page that is very detailed on one specific aspect of that term, they might not bother to look around the rest of the site to see what else it has got. If they’re searching for a more specific term and they land at a very general homepage, they might not bother to hunt around on the site for what they are looking for.
That isn’t something I can help you with, not knowing the keyword in question, the site, or possibly even the language (!), but that’s how my thinking would go if it was my site - you have to consider what landing page is going to get people most interested in reading it and then looking around the site.
If you already have a relevant category matching that exact KW then yes, go ahead and optimise the category page further. If the rest of your site complements that KW then you will likely get both the category page and the home page, or another page ranking alongside it.
I recently came across a new KW for a blog of mine that I wasn’t ranking for. I wrote a post using that KW and created a category using that KW for the post to sit under. Now, both pages are indexed and ranking for that KW.
