Small changes sometimes do make a big difference!

[FONT=verdana][SIZE=2][COLOR=#000000]Hi

I am running several forums based on vBulletin and I am
monetizing my Forums with Google AdSense. One of my ADs
is placed inside the first post of ever thread on the right.

Until 3 weeks ago the text of the first post started on the left
side of the AD like this:

TextTextTextText Ad Ad Ad
TextTextTextText Ad Ad Ad
TextTextTextText Ad Ad Ad
TextTextTextText Ad Ad Ad
TextTextTextTextTextTextT
TextTextTextTextTextTextT

I then changed that by utilizing a neat little CSS “trick” to
make the text flow around the Ad like this:

TextTextTextTextTextTextT
TextTextTextTextTextTextT
TextTextTextText Ad Ad Ad
TextTextTextText Ad Ad Ad
TextTextTextText Ad Ad Ad
TextTextTextText Ad Ad Ad
TextTextTextTextTextTextT
TextTextTextTextTextTextT

This small change increased my CTR over 300% and my eCPM over 350%.

So the lesson is that you never should stop optimizing your Ads
and that even small changes can make a big difference.

If you always keep it the same then people will just become blind. Advertisements have to be placed properly and changed from time to time for sites that deal with re-occuring traffic. I wouldn’t change it every week or month, but every six months at least.

Normally that is the case but the increase I mentioned has nothing to do
with prior banner blindness. I have 94% new visitors each month.
Re-occurring visitors normally register and registered members don’t see Ads
on my forums.

300%? wow! That is just a huge increase for a pretty slight change. thanks for posting this one.

Yes, it is effective because users start to read the article and then the ad becomes more part of the content than the “usual” div float that users have come to avoid and start reading the article on the side (left or right depending where you float it)
with this way, the ctr is increased.

And he is the man that showed me the “trick”

Thanks for that JamesColin

You’re welcome, I wish I could give you more “tricks” but I have no idea what

We’ll figure something out in the future
