If you do freelance web design and development, would you post prices or packages on your site, or would you just let people contact you and base the price off of what they are looking for? I am looking to do more complicated sites that start around $5,000, but I don’t want to list “prices starting at $5,000” if someone just wants help with a WordPress blog. I would take that kind of work now, but I am really looking to get out of the smaller jobs. However, leaving off the price entirely might scare some people away thinking that site might be $20,000 or more.
I post general “starting from” prices on my website for the broad categories of services I offer ranging from a plain vanilla static 5 page website to an e-commerce database driven webiste with PayPal online transactions integrated and a customised CMS.
I also offer image/video processing services for which I have broad prices posted as well.
I’m a one man band and so my overheads are very minimal and I aim to undercut those bigger than me and essentially providing the same services but with larger overheads.
The way I look at it is, if a visitor sees my general prices and makes an enquiry, then they are more likely to be genuinely interested in buying a service than someone just “kicking tyres”.
