OScommerce What's your take?

What do you all think of OScommerce it is free unless you get a template. I have a couple friends that use this shopping cart for their sites and they like it pretty well. Any specific pros and cons or opinions from all of you seasoned shopping cart gurus?

It’s old and hardly updated, that’s the impression I get from oscommerce.

I think it’s an OK system, I agree it’s rarely updated but I would also add that it’s still free if you use templates, you can after all use free templates or build your own, there isn’t a forced cost involved in using templates. I perhaps would go with one of the paid cart solutions purely out of the better level of support

oscommerce is pretty good, despite the fact it is not updated often.
It is very stable in code base.
You can get many modules to extend functionality and fund lots of help on forums.
Most of other carts are not stable yet.

What about ubercart.org ? It’s based on drupal, so at least you have a solid base.

Hey Alex,

So would you not recommend a product like Magento, which is also free, but new, and robust, and offers pretty much every feature at the moment?

I wasn’t too concerned on the support because I figured my Developer would be the guy who would provide support for my business.

What do you think?

Also, the Enterprise version of Magento is like $8,000+ per year
What exactly is the reason for adding $8,000/year besides support?

Thanks,

I don’t use Magento so I can’t comment on the enterprise version however I have no issue with any of the products really, all the well known solutions offer a decent range of features and all do the job well. The key with any solution is checking that they are secure, usable and do the job you need of it.

oscommerce is very bad!!

For what reasons? Have you used it before, if so what was your experience like?

sometimes you need to split up word oscommerce into it’s actual meaning in order to understand its full capacity. Just for a minute put aside the thought of oscommerce being solely a shopping cart.

oscommerce = open source commerce

It’s the oldest and largest community of contributors to a php/mysql open source ecommerce project. It’s a dinosaur among shopping carts and it’s not going anywhere.

Look for a system that helps maximize
your revenue per customer.

Finding a customer is expensive so
make sure you sell them everything
you can.

Also make sure you link an autoresponder
to anything you do so you’re building a list
of customers that you can market to in
the future.

1 and done is no fun!

Sorry but I don’t agree, it hasn’t had many updates recently (granted) but to say it’s going no-where is absurd, so is the claim that the age or number of individuals in the community correlate to the quality or ongoing development of the project. It’s a perfectly reasonable option to use and it’s still undergoing ongoing development.

It’s not a bad foundation, although I would definitely tweek a few things right from the start. It’s PCI compliant as well.

Oscommerce has a large community which is quite helpfully, but to me zen cart is much easier to add addon and i am using magento right now, which i think is the best so far.

What is it thaty you like? Can you provide a little more
detail on the benefits?

I guess the fact that google checkout and paypal express and cross sell are all included out of the box which save me a lot of time.

OScommerce seems OK but i have heard good things about bigcommerce, -have you tried them?

First:
I didn’t say it’s going no-where. I said it’s not going anywhere, meaning that it’s not going to just disappear overnight. I don’t see anything absurd about this statement.

2nd:
Your sentence is confusing in a way that one may think that I said: “the age [or number] of individuals in the community” …

…in a way this reads like I am biased towards age although you meant “the age of the community” not the age of the individuals

3rd:
I never claimed or said anything about a correlation between age and size of community to quality or ongoing development.

over marketed, overpriced, no room for in-house development and it somewhat puts a bad light on the author of the SEOBOOK …just some words to describe Bigcommerce upon first review.

How can you recommend a store plan for me without knowing anything about my business? Separating plans by # of staff logins, I found rather amusing also. $149 per month for a store running 1001 products, I did not find so amusing. None of the videos work for me in FF 2.0.0.20 by the way, so I haven’t even seen a single interface. I can hear sound though.

If you read the Sitepoint FAQ on SEO and Google, you’ll LYAO a little bit about Bigcommerce, the “hardcore seo experts”.

There are some other things I found funny, but I am going to save that for later…

so i do think that oscommerce is good, it`s convenient in use.
