Linux support

Hi,

I’m going to be getting a linux vps and will be using it for gaming servers, i looked around on google for the best OS for linux gaming, i saw some about a list here:

OS:

CentOS 5

Ubuntu 9.1

others:

OpenVZ

Xen

If you have any ideas please post.

If you are wondering about performance use Xen virtualization technology + your distro (i would choose Ubuntu).

Here is a brief description of above:
Xen - http://www.sysadmin.md/xen.html
OpenVZ - http://www.sysadmin.md/openvz.html

I may be wrong but I remember replying to a similar (or same?) post on this (or some other?) forum… weird!

Go for CentOS 5, its the most common and supports cPanel and many other control panels.

OpenVZ and Xen are virtualization environments and your VPS will already be run on one of them. OpenVZ based VPS are generally cheaper than Xen.

If you are getting a VPS in its own right, you won’t be able to consider Xen or OpenVZ - they are virtualisation systems, they run behind the scenes of your chosen OS.

For a game server, Centos / Ubuntu doesn’t really make much difference - I’d say whichever you are more comfortable with. Personally, I’ve used both for game servers and noticed little difference.
