I wonder how big companies do their websites’ SEO. It is just that it would surprise me if they were posting in forums with the company’s website link. I do not think they would like lots of links scattered around in posts from different forums. Am I wrong?
The thing is, instant results might be tons of visits but Does tons of visits due to adwords imply as well that the website will show up earlier in Google results when people look for keywords related to these big companies?
From my experience, the problem seems to be that companies sometimes hire SEO firms that are less than reputable. Although links in comments for the most part have limited impact (ie. nofollow), a lot of these SEO firms will take it upon themselves to create bogus forum accounts and create comment spam on behalf of their clients.
The client may not be aware this is happening until other sites (often competitors) start complaining about being spammed.
For a big company, they have lot more budget in hand but no time. So they will use advertising campaigns using Google, yahoo etc. They don’t want to wait for a long time like six months. If they were looking for the organic results from the search engines, then their business will go down.
I partially agree with you that big companies have huge budget and so they will go for advertising media first. But it is not true that they will never go for SEO tactics. They actually hire reputable SEO firms and they work for them. And forum posting is one method of link building .It is not required that every one should go for this method only. There are many other link building methods and they are highly used by all including big companies as well.
Yes, same as any website, forum with follow link can help your site rank in SERP. But I think quality of backlinks in forum is not good because a forum usually have a lot of link in a page.

But what’s the reason of it???..
Ask yourself a question. When you are reading Sitepoint Forums or other online forums, how often do you click on someone else’s signature links? For most people, the answer is going to be “not very often”, particularly if the forum is not very closely related to the business sector.
Stevie D has answered one of the reasons. And beside of that, one webpage (like the thread you’re reading) in a forum has a lot of links. The more link a webpage have, the less quality it share to each link.
For example in this thread before I send this post, this page have total 335 links. And many people experienced that a webpage should not have more than 100 links.
I suppose forum/blog posting will help link back? Of course, the site must have do follow link.
But for me, forum is a place to network, exchange thought, sharing, contributing knowledge and etc. Personally does not really look into the signature of the person unless the person is knowledgeable and very helpful.
And that’s the problem, it’s just effective enough to be useful if done en masse, and so forums everywhere are being choked to death by leeches with signature links making fluff posts.

Can you explain how links in forum signatures help a site to make a profit? (The answer is ‘no’). Most forums make signature links “nofollow”, which means search engines completely ignore them. Even if they aren’t nofollow, the chances are that they’re on internal pages with minimal or zero PR, so you’ll get no benefit from them. And as for attracting visitors, how often do you click on other people’s signature links?
