What are some best strategies for link building in 2016 that are Google safe.

Have you seen this Matt Cutts video? It’s from a few years back, but it’s all still valid.
The best strategy of all, of course, is to create a quality site with great content that other sites will choose to link to.
If you look around the Marketing section here, you’ll find other threads on a similar theme, such as this current one: What is backlinks and how to get it quality? You may find other ideas there, but be sure to read the whole thread; not all the suggestions will be “Google safe”.
I’ve actually seen this question several times in different places. I don’t think that because the year changed from 2015 to 2016 suddenly the rules changed. the seo rules still apply and until google comes out with a new update I don’t think there is a need to change strategies.

I think content marketing will the best option, for that you need to setup a blog to your website. Where you have to write unique and engaging content. share this content over social media with appropriate graphics. People will click on your post and come down to your website. Once they reach to your blog, you can land those visitors to your website by using proper anchor text.
More than that. A blog is good, as well as being active on social platforms, but the content on your website itself needs to be fully optimized. The site itself needs to be set up for the bot to crawl easily. You need to build quality backlinks, blah blah blah…all of the old rules still apply. One thing though that people can embrace more is the email list. Implementing a lightbox pop up on the company blog or website can ensure that you grow your email list, improving your ROI for email marketing campaigns. Which again, should include high-quality content and a link to the company website. Email marketing campaigns are really good for securing return traffic. This all depends on your business niche of course.
Networking too should continue to be highly focused on. Connecting with applicable industry experts, exchanging guest posts and securing high-quality backlinks. Good old tactic that never goes out of style.

Natural links are what anyone needs in 2016. Natural links are those that you don’t create but get created without your efforts. That will only happen if you have a great content and people are linking back to your great content.
So, focus on content marketing, that is the key.
content is king, we don’t say more.

It will always be important to build good links especially making sure relevant anchor text is used.
In 2016, it’s content that counts the most. Without an unique and valuable content, it’s actually impossible to achieve a good position in oragnic search results

As the year changes from 2015 to 2016, the search engine rules are not changed yet. The rules for SEO are same, the best way of link building is bookmarking both social and image, video uploads, forum posting, web 2.0.
The content should be unique and fresh. Also link it to various social media platform.

It seems your information is out of date, and things have moved on since those days. Links which you can easily place yourself are largely ignored by search engines, and if done to excess, may be regarded as “link schemes”, which can result in your site being penalised.
Additionally, most reputable sites (such as SitePoint) follow Google’s recommendations and mark user-submitted links as nofollow.
If you had read the thread before posting, you would also have realised that forum posting is not the way to gain links - at least, not on this forum, which does not permit signatures or other forms of self-promotion. (Reading the FAQs would also have told you that.)
