Which wold you go with as a platform for a news portal type website.
Joomla or WordPress?
Not to be sarcastic, but that’s like asking “Which would you prefer with your eggs, sausage or bacon?” (The vegans in the crowd aren’t thrilled with this choice…)
Both are excellent CMS platforms. It depends on what your specific parameters and needs are.
Wordpress is extremely easy to use and is very simple when you want to add an image, publish a page or a new item, whereas Joomla is more “feature-rich” and has more of a “frustration phase” in which you try to do the slightest modification and it does not work, of course once you learn to use it and overcome your frustration it is a great CMS.
I would recommend Wordpress because it’s easier.
For a news portal, I would recommend Wordpress.
Wordpress has definitely found a niche with the news portal folks.
Most of our clients asked our staff to make their website on wordpress so I would suggest it because it highly recommended and used by most webmasters.
I would go for WordPress too!

I suggest you use Wordpress, it has more advantage than Joomla. Wordpress is also a user-friendly platform.
I perfer Wordpress but thats just me, I have never been a fan of Joomla.

I prefer WordPress.
Basically both of them are CMS. But for news portal I believe you should have custom application which gives you powerful features which are required for a news portal. In news portal you need to stress on time and accuracy, rather than anything else.
You can achieve news portal with both Joomla and Wordpress, both are good at their jobs. Somehow I feel Wordpress got more options to “spread the word” around the world like RSS, ATOM, XML, Bookmarks, Social Network sharing, and many auto-update plugins, which is essential for a new news portal.

WordPress is a website engine built on the premise that installing it, running it, and publishing basic content with it should be as quick and simple as possible.
Joomla is a different animal, it’s for managing and publishing a lot of different content types, in different ways, while looking good doing it.

* Even the most elderly of users can get the hang of it quickly

* Not developer friendly
* The community seems to like to complain
* Upgrades bring more bugs than fixes sometimes
Joomla Pros
* Friendly for all types of users - Designers, Developers and Administrators
* Huge community is awesome for assisting with creation of websites
* Has been rapidly growing and improving itself for the past three years
Joomla Cons
* Still not user-friendly enough for everyone to understand
* Not quite as powerful as Drupal, and can be a bit confusing for some to jump into
* Recently rebuilt the entire system from ground-up, and so there are still many out there sticking to the old versions (1.0.x)
That would be an understatement. Perhaps programmed by a monkey is a better way to put it.

I prefer Joomla, but peoples find very easy to work with wordpress, it is good for beginners.
