Hi all, got another one for you… I have a site where the huge chunk of biz will feed off of the stuff in current events… so naturally I would like to include some current even info on the site so people know where I am coming from.
Now is it better for SEO to copy excerpts, quotes, portions, or even whole articles from existing stories, ie on CNN, NY Times, etc, or is there a negative to that and I should just pop in a link to that page on that external site?
Later when we start making some profits or I have more time, I am more than willing to write my own content, current events or otherwise, but for now, I just need material that is correct and well written.
by “pop in a link to that page on that external site” do you mean link back to the original source of the article?
If you’re re-writing or copying large parts of an article that’s probably what you should do, to credit the original source.
Ideally though you should make time (or hire someone) to write original content for you, even if it’s just commenting or giving your opinion on other articles.
Remember there’s heaps of aggregators out there which mash-up multiple sources of content. If you’re only doing that, will your site be that much different/better than the competition?
It isn’t so much about SEO as copyright laws. It is flat-out illegal to copy large chunks of text in the way that you suggest, as well as misleading to your readers. What you should do is post a link to the real article, and you could reasonably copy the headline and maybe the first paragraph as a ‘teaser’ if writing your own teasers isn’t a goer.
There’s no point in getting to #1 in Google if CNN starts legal action against you the next day and you have to take your website down…
What is u quote and give credit? And I am, never talking about whole articles, dont have room for that, it would just be a teaser or paragraph at most.
