I need to learn more. Any broad overviews I can read regarding the different hosting options that exist and the pros and cons? I’ve been learning as I go along I just need to better understand what’s involved. Suggest some reading material if you know of any.

I think more than wikipedia, the web hosting forums would be great for learning. In wikipedia, it is explained in much complicated language. However, in forums different topics are discussed with the respective hosting services. Just to make understand yourself, first thing you should do is to get understand the hosting terminologies. Understanding these terms will make it much easier for you to know about hosting.
Newbie should have more or less knowledge of following topics.
Webservers (IIS, Apache)
Mail servers
Domain Name Servers
Domain registrar
Control panels
VPS (Virtualization)
FTP Server
A little bit knowledge of PHP, MySQL, ASP, .Net, MSSQL is an added advantages.
Get overview of above and related topics, then start to acquire the in depth of each. As it progresses, the new topics added like Firewall, Backup restore, Analyzing logs, clustering, cloud computing etc.
You should read articles on web hosting forums and blogs etc.
wiki will also be helpful for you. Before hosting, you should have some knowledge about DNS, cpanel, FTP, bandwidth and disk space etc.
