Hello, I just started an AWESOME website at Rate My community - How can i promote this site good? I want to get people rating their cities and states and schools…
First step is to make the site work right – clicking on my state does nothing. I found several states with no links in the map.
Site issues aside you need to get people aware of the site. This can be through building up search listings to local pages, buying ads, or generating viral buzz. Any way you slice it the idea is to get a lot of engagement quickly so that people start spreading the word and returning frequently.

Associate a blog with your site , do unique post for that , left comments to other’s blog, i think its worked for promoting a new website .
I think local sites only tend to work when you focus on one geographical area at a time. Start with a single community, single university area, single city, etc. Do some kind of targeted promotion there – both online (local targeted PPC ads, local review sites like Yelp) and offline (pay some college students to get some fliers in freshman dorms in the area – freshmen are just discovering their new locales as they start college).
If you do follow the standard one-liners like above, getting some random clicks from people not even in the right country, you’ll get nowhere. People won’t want to use your site if there’s no content when they check out their region, and people won’t write content if it looks like nobody else is participating in the area.
Almost all the popular local sites started out in one region and rolled out a few more regions at a time. They didn’t start off with empty sections for the whole country and hope it’d fill up. Yelp, Craigslist, etc. all started off as specific to the San Francisco bay area.
i think you should try to make it with help of different forums. you will look for different topics relating to your site and make post with the link to your site. not spaming of course.
also there are other possibilities, for example side wide links or somethig in such direction. There are site who suggest to make a link exchange. sometimes it`s only exchange for free but sometimes not, so be attentive.

I would suggest that you use twitter and facebook to promote your site. If you can get enough followers on both of these sites then you can blast them with quality updates about your site. This really works and most people use these 2 sites any ways so why not do some work while you are on there.
