I think you should Hire an Marketing Team first and then go for a Sales one. Marketing team can Bring more Traffic to your website. Once you get a good amount of Traffic for your website then you can Hire a Sales Team. Also, as you have products on your website to sell, I would suggest you to keep a chat application on your website so that if a Customer wants some information about a product, he/she can contact the sales department and get the information which can ensure that he/she will signup for the product.

Once you have an affiliates program, you can focus a part of your effort in promoting it, because it will buy you an online sales team with no base salary. And if things get big quickly you can hire someone to deal with the affiliates and create banners and other graphics for their promotions.

shoby, I think the right way depends on your business. just an example, my friend has a business - wedding dresses internet shop. I see no need to have sales team, what for? It’s a wedding dress, not a transportation services. But in same cases it can be better to hire a sales team!

You should try to get traffic to your site which can be done by a good Marketing team, once you are have it, you can hire a Team for Sales which will convert the traffic to deals 
How in the world could anyone tell you whether direct sales or web traffic would be better for your online business without knowing what you sell and who your potential customers are? That’s just silly to me.
No offense to everyone offering ideas, I’m not saying they’re not good ideas… just that there’s no way to know which are better than others without knowing more about what you do.
