Exchanging links

This is probably a stupid question but I am going to ask it!

Say you are running a seo campaign for a client, now you want to exchange back links with similar websites but the client doesn’t want to have their website showing links (to visitors) going to similar websites. I could set up a hidden page with links to partners but then who is going to want to exchange links to a hidden page plus the page rank would be very low.

What is the best way to get round this issue?

IMHO you should tell the client he can’t have it both ways.
If he wants incoming backlinks, than he should also allow for outgoing backlinks (assuming link trading).

How do you make it hidden? From robors.txt? If your partner see that resource page is noindexd do he want to go for link-exchange?

Sorry when I say hidden I mean no links going to that page, so that basically no visitors will be able to find it

So how than will be google bot for example be able to find it ??
Using a sitemap or something ??

I will add it to the sitemap both html and xml

It sounds like your client wants one-way backlinks rather than reciprocal links. If he/she can answer the above question then he’s smarter than me.

You only have a few (grey/black hat) alternatives:

  • cloaking - only showing to search engine useragents
  • obfuscation - wrapping links using JS/CSS containers

Both are likely to negatively affect your client in the long run - time to “get real” with that client.

The cleanest way is to add the links page from a sitemap page

Don’t exchange links at all, just acquire proper links.

Is 3-way link exchange still working?

Only in Nigeria - and only when you have answered the coded email regarding the transfer of funds from overseas bank accounts using the secret password ‘419’.
