Email Marketing

So I am looking to start using email as part of my marketing plan. I have been looking at designing or getting one designed a email template that looks great and is not just words on a screen. I receive emails from company above razors etc and they have a great looking email template that they use. I am aware of the website they use to send out the emails, but my question is I have tried to design a template like theirs but it does not come out right, it looks like they have a backgroud picture that they can type the message over. What I need to know is can this be done from learning code or is it better to have a company do it? I am assuming HTML code is used to make this?

thanks in advance

Welcome to the forums, @NeverTie.

This isn’t something I’ve done myself, but I’m aware that sending HTML e-mail is notoriously tricky. Have you seen this thread? Email News Letter

You seem to be looking more for advice on designing the e-mail, rather than the actual marketing side, so I’ll move this to the HTML forum. (It can always be moved back at a later stage.)

HTML Email templates are a real pain (at least to me). Sure, you can build one from scratch, but you must take into account mobile device widths, loads of email clients, and other factors that can change the way your email template looks.

After years of designing my own from scratch, I find it much easier to use a company like MailChimp (which is free, depending on how many addresses you are storing).

they have a great drag and drop utility that can get me a nice looking email template all on its own. And if for some reason I need to hand-code it to customize it more, i can view the source, make my changes, then upload that code as a custom template.

if you haven’t already, check out www.mailchimp.com for free sign-up
(I don’t work for MailChimp in anyway, but I’ve found they stay more up-to-date technology-wise compared to Constant Contact which i’ve used in the past)

Does MailChimp provide statistics for bounce and open rates?

I use Campaing Monitor and they certainly do. Mailchimp is bigger than Campaing Monitor so it is very likely that they do it too.

How would you get statistics for open rates - with proper email security in place there should be no way of telling whether someone opened an email or not.

I am using MailChimp for email marketing. Its too good as it shows detailed information about mailer as well as their inbuilt templates are good.
