Duplicate content

Hi,

Will google punish your whole site for haveing dup content r just the pages that have duplicate content?

Thanks

Google won’t punish anything for duplicate content. They simply try to filter it out.

i think that`s wrong… i know that duplicate content is illegal ( kind of… )

What you doing is nothing but canonicalization. If your site contains multiple pages with duplicate content, you can indicate your preferred URL to Google in several ways called canonicalization. If you want to get high page rank and get good traffic do things genuinely.

Google will punish whole site and stop crawling and indexing in your site.

That depends on what is duplicated, where and why … if it looks like you have stolen content from someone else’s site, Google will not be happy. If it looks like you have put the same page up in two different places and not been smart enough to merge them into one, Google is unlikely to penalise you, but you will probably find that your ratings are split between the two pages, so you won’t do as well in the SERPs.

It’s always better to have unique content on your own site. And the best way to screw it is to post your content on article sites that are stronger than yours. Therefore, your own site content is viewed as duplicate even if it was the original. However, duplicate is not illegal as said above

:nono:THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A DUPLICATE CONTENT PENALTY. Ok, now this is a fallacy that has gone way to far, and it has been discredited by a few Google executives.

What happens is that Google’s algorithms will crawl a site and take various things into consideration, content, keyword, keyword relevancy to content, backlinks, meta tags, etc. They will then choose the site that has the MOST relevancy to the Keyword or keyphrase that is searched, the other site or sites will simply be filtered out. This means they will NOT be indexed. NOW, perhaps this is why many have confused this filtering out with a penalty, but the truth is that if you UPDATE your content, maybe modify the keywords, meta tags, etc. your site WILL have a chance at being indexed. If there was such a thing as a penalty it would not have the second chance.

FINALLY, anyone who finds the need to copy someone else’s work and content should not be in this business. In case you did not know, copying something that someone else wrote is a violation, punishable under copyright laws, called Plagiarism.

aw, good answer although the hooperdude said it with fewer words.

That is your personal moral judgement. We could also say that NBA players
should not “throw elbows”, and NFL safetys and cornerbacks should not
interfere with the receivers, but they do. Sometimes they are called on it,
sometimes not; but it’s not a moral decision for you or I.

Copying someone else’s work is exactly what Google does for their own gain.
Sure, I could opt out by excluding Google, but that is not the point here.
They do not have my permission to copy my content, but they do it for the
money. There are many sites ranking very well that copy content.

Sometimes it’s called syndication.

There is a popular myth about duplicate content. And that is that Google penalizes sites for having duplicate content. There is in fact no duplicate content penalty. But you might have little chance of getting any rankings.
