Submitting to only High pr Directories with your Niche Might Help you . Directories should be in your Local Area where you want to optimize your website . But submitting to thousands of Directory is not going to work for you in 2012 …
Basically every tools proves you a spammer in the search engines, even you use article submitter, bookmarking submitter or directories submitter. I advice you to submit directories manually and change your keyword after every submission.
Care to explain exactly how the search engines know if you submitted to directories manully or via a sumitter tool?
They use time tracker, ip address tracker and many other ways to check whether the submission is done by a human being or a software.
I agreed on this point. Directory sites are very beneficial to get your site indexed quickly, but it must be in niche category otherwise leaves a bad impression on the crawler.

I think, submitting your site in Link Directory help you to get a quality backlink from niche category, but do it genuinely/manually.

I agree with this Poster, thier are about 25-35 to Directories, I would stick to the top ones and forget abou the others Unless they happen to be in your niche
than I would look at the tops ones and ones that are in your field Ie Medical health Cars engines etc. but you also need a tool
to see if the work you are doing is effective,

What a load of nonsense. Google have no way of knowing if you submitted manually or via submission software. How does Google even know what IP address I am submitted to a directory from???
I do not think SEs bots can find it… I heard that many tools will submit to bulk sites which may contains dir, dating, spam etc sites… so this bulk submission may be cause problem…
No, there is nothing in the Webmaster guidelines that says don’t submit to directories. You may find this video from Matt Cutts useful.
It is in answer to a question about paid directories but gives general advice as well:
Goog directories have mechanisms in place to prevent automated submissions. You can use these tools but the
directories that you are able to submit to are unlikely to give you links that are of any real value.
Directories are not dead. It’s only if anyone submits same description, to various directories hosted on same server, these links are devalued. Unique submissions to directories located at different Class C blocks still work and are considered as good back-links.
How do you actually know that this is the case?

By checking the IP addresses of each directory. I check them at http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp

yeah absolutely correct… Google is smarter then us. So Google will found manual submission or used tools. and one more thing according my experience directory submission is totally waste of time. expect popular directory if other directories will allow there is no use. In popular directory is they wont give the approval.
I believe the point cbp is trying to make is that the directories may be able to track whether the link has been submitted manually or not, and treat it accordingly, but once it’s in the directory, Google and other search engines have no way of knowing how it got there. Automated software may harm your chances of getting your link accepted by a directory - certainly any one worth being listed in - but it cannot have any effect on how Google views your directory links.
