I run a store that sells thousands of workplace safety items. Majority of what our industry sells is just copy/pasted descriptions, sizes and a few photos of the items. Any ideas on how to really set myself apart from the competition? Tabled breakdown of features? Content on product category explaining how to choose the correct item?
Sorry if this seems like a novice thing, just trying to dive in and learn from people smarter than I.
I am not smarter than you, but what I think about that: you need to look at your competition and you may often find a gap that no one else is filling. See if there is a product your competitors don’t offer but your potential clients might be interested in.
Also a great strength is social media. It’s easy to post on social media Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and foursquare. You can also have a board on Pinterest. And if you want to go a step further, post a video on YouTube, explaining the best stuffs of your store
Hope I was useful!
Search engines will not generally include duplicated content in SERPs. That means if the same body of text (a product description for example) is found on a number of sites, only one of those will appear in SERPs.
The one chosen will be the one the search engine believes to be the original. So if you have copied content from elsewhere there is a good chance of your pages missing out in SERPs.
The answer to this problem is unique original content. It may be worth the time invested in re-writing the descriptions in your own words and if possible expanding on the information offered about a product.
Aside from the SEO benefits, the more informative and helpful your content is in helping a potential cusomer choose a product, the happer that customer will be in choosing you.
Only one competitor has a table that they use on majority of their products.
Thank you for all the great replies everyone. Someone posted in the forums here recently that said, “If you’re trying to post quality content just for higher rankings, you’re doing it wrong. You should be posting quality content for the benefit of your customers” or something to that extent… That way of thinking really got me to restructure how I think about the content on my website. I don’t have a negative attitude towards taking that extra step any more!
