Color Stabiliiy

Sitepoint Members,
I found a blue that I like on one of my monitors, but it’s easter purple on another. Which color are most surfers seing?

Thans,

Chris

I can’t see anything at the moment.

Blue to Purple seems like quite a difference!

I think all set-ups will have some differences, the trick is not to have everything identical cross-users, but looking compatible per-user.

So slight variations are to be expected and I don’t think there’s much if anything that can be done about that.

What do most see? Who knows, hopefully most see something at least close to what you want.

If there are any hints on how to limit the range of variation, I’d like to hear them. Maybe certain colors are more likely to have this problem than others?
i.e. better to design using those colors for things where a difference will have minimum impact on the overall look of the design?

Yes, certainly that’s the case in my experience, though it was more with older monitors than the current ones. The first time I used a certain blue on my Mac I was shocked to see it come out purple on a different, older monitor. At the time, I found that “web safe” colors were more reliable, but I let that stuff go years ago as monitors improved.

I currently have an iMac and an older Mac laptop, and colors are quite different between them, so it’s something you have to live with ultimately.

The problem was my browser saving the color of several edits before. Woops.
Thanks

It wasn’t the browser. I looked at the site on a new monitor and it was easter purple, becase the site was programmed on this StarLogic montior which has always seemmed to have fewer but deeper colors. I used the auto adjust and the hex numbers didn’t look any different.

There may be a problem with the browser in which you saw easter purple because there are some browsers that do not support colors. For making corrections in it, i.e. to show blue in all browsers you have to specify all colors in site.

Its statistics really. Just find out what brand/type of monitor most of users have, and youll have your answer
