Is it any worth it to buy a domain for a long time rather than buying it only for a year from a SEO point of view?

Does Goolge assign more page rank to a domain that was bought for several years ahead than to a domain that has only one more year of life ahead?

There have been numerous theories floated that domains registered for a longer period of time will help you in the rankings because it is theorized that spammers will not register a domain for very long, but someone who is serious about creating a legitimate, long lasting site will register it for longer.
